September 9, 2004

Charleston, SC - The 4th Annual Softball Challenge between former football players from The Citadel Alumni Football Association (AFA) and the Furman Football Association (FFA) was held June 19th.
Since this event was renamed last year to the John Bagwell Memorial Softball Challenge, both teams contribute $250.00 for the Tournament Prize. Of the total $500.00 Prize, $200.00 is donated directly to the John Bagwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for students at Fort Dorchester High School. The remaining $500.00 is split with $200.00 going to the winning teams' Alumni Football Association and $100.00 going to the losing teams' Alumni Football Association. As with many athletic tournaments, the trophy is passed from last year's winner to this years winning team.

Unlike the 2003 tournament that was played at Johnson Hagood Stadium, this year's tournament was held at College Park due to stadium renovations. The tournament is scheduled to return to Johnson Hagood Stadium once a decision is made as to the stadiums future.

Game One was highlighted by Chris Walters dazzling three-hitter against the Purple Pukes giving the Bulldogs a triumphant 8-1 victory. This returned the Bulldogs legacy of always winning the first game.

Game Two was marred by a lack of timely hitting on the part of the Bulldogs that stranded eight runners in a 6-1 loss to Furman.

Game Three was "no contest" from the beginning. As the 100-degree temperature and humidity rose at College Park, the Bulldogs mauled the Furman team. Chris Barker's inside-the-park home run keyed a 5-1 victory for the Dogs in the third and deciding game.

It was the fourth consecutive year the Dogs won the Tournament and will now retain the trophy, which is proudly displayed in the Football Trophy Showcase in Seignious Hall.

Both teams met at Bobby Hartin's Sports Bar & Grill for "after tournament" festivities, where the losing team had to buy the rounds. It was agreed by both teams that it was once again a successful Tournament and that everyone is looking forward to next year's Tournament.
